Shaken: Saw a road traffic accident in Southall
August 11th, 2010 by Simon

I was riding home tonight and I hit traffic as usual coming into Southall town centre. I weaved through stationary traffic and at the head of the queue was an HGV (just the cab). It had its hazards on and just as I pulled up behind it I thought it had been in a crash. I saw some debris in the road a few feet behind the truck.

As I drew up beside the debris I saw it was a walking stick. Just then I saw the driver of the lorry climbing out of the truck clutching a mobile phone to his ear. He looked as white as a sheet. I thought he’s probably embarrassed about breaking down and across two lanes of rush hour traffic.

As I slowly passed the lorry I saw him. Under the passenger wheel was an Asian man. He didn’t look old, he had jet black hair. He was still and blood was pooling around his head. From the brief glimpse I got as I passed he looked like he was pinned under the front wheel.

I must admit I panicked at that point. My usual response is someone else will deal will it. I knew the driver was probably on the phone to emergency services and there looked to be lots of bystanders,

All this flashed through my mind briefly as I moved past the accident. However not 30 feet from the site is Southall police station. It crossed my mind that the Police have better first aid training than me, so I slewed the bike into their car park and ran into reception.

The officer behind the glass screen was talking to a customer, but after some slight banging on the door, she came out to ask what was wrong. I told her about the accident and she dropped all of her her clients and with a colleague, ran out of the police station.

I don’t know what happened to the guy under the truck. I don’t know why I’m writing this apart from it’s part of my life and it’s slightly cathartic.

Made me think about life a bit anyway
Simon

Hi Simon

My hats off to you to publish this news so quickly and your endeavour in doing whatever you can.
But I walked past through the park as the road around was cordoned off, while returning through Southall after you have done ur bit and quickly published this accident.
Well, I only heard someone nearby talking or hearsays about accident. But I didnt know exactly the incident. You got it straight on the internet.
Well, its so unfortunate the victim whosoever he is.
You are faster than the Metropolitan police or the media who wait for all their procedures to be done before publishing.

I dont know what the police, the firebrigade, the ambulance and all those around were doing or intending to do ! Traffic is fully blocked. No sign of the victim or his family whereabouts. The police station being just before the accident, it is ironical though. I dont know how it happened. I even didnt like the manner in which bypassers or curious people are kept ignorant of the accident and death of the victim.

But some rules will have to be laid down for Heavy Goods Vehicle so much so for the pedestrians or cyclists or whosoever, for that matter all concerned.
It is so disappointing that such a tragedy has happenned just few yards nearby Southall police station and the high street, which is busy though. No doubt, all the locals would walk or cycle into the Park for leisure.
How the truck driver drove or why the teenage boy(heard from by bystanders) got pinned down a matter of investigation, either due to his own fault or fault of the truck driver or both.

Above all, my question to Police, the Govt and the Transport Department is……………………
WHY SHOULD HEAVY TRUCKS BE ALLOWED TO BE DRIVEN THROUGH THE BUSY HIGH STREET IN THE FIRST PLACE? IT IS SO SCARY FOR MYSELF, WHILE WALKING ON THE KERB, TO SEE MASSIVE TRUCKS NEAR RESIDENTIAL AREAS, IN OR AROUND THE HIGH STREET, WHERE ELDERS, CHILDREN AND SENIOR CITIZENS, PASS BY NORMALLY.
EITHER THE TRAFFIC RULES ARE NOT TAUGHT FROM CHILDHOOD STRICTLY, OR THAT DRIVERS KNOW NOT THE RISK OF FAST OR SLOW DRIVING IN SUCH BUSY AREAS, ESPECIALLY IN CASE OF A TRUCK WITH HIGHER CHASSIS AND FREEFLOW SPACE BETWEEN GIANT WHEELS, HARDLY NOTICEABLE BY THE TRUCK DRIVER, EVEN BEFORE ANYONE GETS PINNED DOWN.

Yes, all of us must think and refocus on how we regulate our thinking, planning regulations, walking, driving, cycling though.

May God rest the soul in peace!

Thanks a lot once again for a quick note on your website.
Whether you like it or not, I will paste your url into my facebook right straight away.

Take care and Bye

Simon,
I was in a black golf directly behind the truck, the driver had only just pulled away in traffic when he slammed his brakes on. At first I wondered if he thought someone had driven into him, until he got out and told me someone was under the truck, could I check. I looked, I saw what you described and felt quite light headed. I then asked the truck driver if he wanted me to back the traffic up, so he could roll the truck back. He said he was calling the police and should wait.

Someone behind asked if I could move my car round the truck, so they could get past, not sure if they realised what had happened. I pulled in in front of the pub, I thought about getting back out to help, but I don’t think anyone could have done anything. Then like you, I remembered the police station was only a hundred yards away. To be honest I was a bit freaked out and wanted to get away from the accident. I think you just told the police just before me because they started coming out and running down the street.

I often drive through Southall and I often see pedestrians cross the road through traffic, anywhere they want, even if there is a crossing twenty yards away.

I think you did the right thing going to the police station.

Mark

My dearest sympathies to you and your family Kuldip, I walked past the accident site a few minutes after it happened ( when the police were already there), i can only confort you in the fact that I do not think your father suffered for a long time after the collision, from what was stated, he passed away instantly. may his soul rest in peace now.

Kuljit, So sorry for you and everyone in your family about the tragic and sudden loss of your father. It is such a terrible thing to happen. Hoping you may all find the love and support you need at this difficult time.

It was my dad under that lorry. i had a shock of my life when i heard the news. he did not deserve to die like this. I dont think we will ever get over this shock or will take us a very very long time. Our father will never come back.Even though we have seen his body but still unbelieveable that he has gone.
